Since this work was never published during Mendelssohn's lifetime, it was not assigned an opus number, and is not generally well-known. The works included in this volume consist of Op. 12, 13, the three quartets from Op. 44, and Op. 80, as well as the Four Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 81.
